CITY FATHER’S “SWIG”
CHAMPAGNE UNDER PRESSURE
LONDON, Sept. (i. The story of a champagne luncheon held in the tunnel beneath the River Hudson and which nearly ended disastrously was told by Prof. Sir Leonard Hill at the meeting of the British Association at Bristol.
Homo years ago, at the opening of* the Hudson tunnel, lie said, tho Mayor and City Fathers of New York decided to celebrate the occasion with a champagne luncheon. Having entered the tunnel they proceeded to open bottles, when, to their consternation, they found there was no fizz in the wine, as owing to the compressed state of the air the gas was not. given off. I “That: is all the better,” gleefully! exclaimed one of the City Fathers.' “We will be aide to drink the more.”) Having consumed half the contents,' lie replaced the cork and put his bottle in his pocket. As they came to tho ordinary atmosphere tho bottle exploded with tremendous force and nearly killed one of the party, who declared angrily that a dastardly attempt had been made on his life. The halfbottle inside tho City Father immcdi-l ately released its 002 and the City Father nearly burst. j
