MINING LEADER’S DEATH
ROMANCE OF BROKEN HILL MELBOURNE, October 17. The death occurred at his home today of Mr, Bowes Kelly, a leader of the mining industry in Australia. The creation of his fortune was bound up with the romantic development of Broken Hill towards the end of the last century. Mr. Kelly was born in County Gaiwav, Ireland, in 1852, and came to Australia in 1860. After engaging in farming for some years, Mr. Kelly, who had always been interested in mining, bought for £l5O a share of one-four-teenth, in "the first Broken Hill Mining Co. In a few years the £l5O share had a capital valuation of more than £1,250,000. Mr. Kelly became a director of the original Broken Hill l*ty., Co., Ltd., in 1885, and was director until his death, lie was chairman of direct ors from 1892 until 1922. Mr. Kelly was regarded as the father of the Mt. Lyell mine in Tasmania, and was a director of many other companies He leaves a widow, two sons, and four daughters.
