N.Z. CUP MEETING TRACK IMPRESSIONS NIOIITMAROH’S GOOD SHOWING. (Special to the Herald.) CJIUI STCHy RCIJ, this day. At Riecarloii yesterday Nightmavch and True Shaft broke away at the. ninofurlong mark and kept close company for live furlongs, which they ran in 1.4 1-5. True Shaft was then eased off, Knockany joining in and finishing alongside Nightmare!), whoso time for the full journey was 1.54 J-5, the Inst mile taking 1.41 2-5, and the last half 50 4-ssec. 'J'ho euji favorite was galloping freely all the way, and lie finished full of running. Night-march's effort was easily the best of the day. Starshooter and Beau Caste were together all tln* way over seven furlongs, run in 1.52 1-5.

Count Palatine, Star Stranger, la the Shade, Gay Crest, and Love Song broke away at the mile and a, quarter post. Love Song and Gay Crest were the early leaders, but Love Song was eased up after going six furlongs, where In the Shade was going well. Star Stranger and Gay Crest were together in the lead when fairly in the straight, but Count Palatine, finishing well, was alongside them at the winning post with In llm Shade a, couple of lengths away. The lime was 2.12 2-5, the first half-mile being done in 54 l-ssoe, and the last six furlongs in 1.18 1-5. It was a good gallop in which In the Shade van disappointingly. He went well in the early stages, being in front, at the end of six furlongs; but lie failed over the last halfmile. Though a free worker as a rule, however, lie has the reputation of being moody at times on the track, so little notice need be taken of bis defeat.

Savgo.n, Appledore, Cylinder, and Paratoo wore associated over a mile and a quarter. Paratoo was the early lender, but Cylinder and Appledore beat bim home by two lengths, with Nnrgon three lengths further back. It was a good gallop, the full journey occupying 2.12 1-5, and the last mile 1.45 15. Cylinder and Appledore went, well, Init Paratoo did not suffer by comparison, as lie was giving the other pair a good deal of weight. Paratoo is likely to be a pronounced favorite for the Spring Plate, while lie will have many admirers in the Derby. Gustavo and Count Favour were associated over seven furlongs on the plough. They took 53 4-ssec for the first half-mile, and finished the going in 1.33 3-5. It was Gustavo’s first gallop since lie returned from Trenlham, arid he pulled up well. Courtesy was responsible for a. brilliant effort over six furlongs. There is no doubt as to her speed, but she is very fractious, and some trouble was experienced in persuading her to start on her task., i Prodiee and Desert Glow went about a mile and a quarter on the plough at a. sound pace, taking 1.20 for the last six furlongs. Star Stranger has been galloping well since he arrived at Riecnrton, and if he had had ihe benefit of as much racing as some of bis rivals his cup chances would have been taken very seriously. Lack of racing, however, will be against him in a hard finish.

“Owing to financial stringency throughout New Zealand, and extra taxation that is being levied on trotting and racing,' it- cannot, be sail! that tlio outlook for the coming season is particularly bright,” stated the annual report of the Manawatu Trotting Club, presented at the annual meeting in Palmerston North. The balance-sheet, showed a credit balance of £779 19s 4d.

Iu formally moving the adoption of the annual report and balunco-s'heet, Air. Mouldey said that the dub bud experienced a. successful year from the point of view of finance and racing. Less money bad gone through (he totalisat.br than in previous years, but the present economic condition ho thought was responsible for tliis.
