PHAR LAP’S GREAT WIN THREE LENGTHS TO SPARE STEEPLES TO INDICATE (Elec. Tol. Copyright—United Press Assn.) MELBOURNE, Nov. -I, The weather was showery for the races. There was a large attendance,, including several New Zealanders. Heavy rain, accompanied hv hail, fell after the first race. The Cap .seratehiiigs were: Wapiily at 12.0 p.m., and John Bucliun at 12.25 p.m. Olina was sixth at the turn, but finished best in the Cup Hurdles, and won easily. The owner-trainer, Mr. Connolly, won the corresponding event with Migrant in ItU'S. The imported First Arrow, long overdue for success, won the Railway Highweight Handicap. The trainer is tiie funner New Zealander, Lou Robertson, and the owner, Mr. Wade, raced Amoiinis early in his career. Calina led all the way in the November Nursery, and won comfortably. First and .second in this race are daughters of Legionnaire. The winner cost LHOgus. The Cup Steeples provided an eventtill nice. Nauru, Adit, .Sandhurst mid Ragatiky fell. Indicate led at the last jump,'and won easily. His rider, inksou. won previously on Extortion and Agrilgolo. There was also an exciting finish in the. Yan Yean Stakes, in which Opera Queen beat the last-finishing Pentiums. The winner is owned and (rained in South Australia. Following are the results: — MELBOURNE CUP Phar Lap (.1. First Acre, Star (iod, Phar Lap, and Balloon King, with Veihnond last. At the mile Temptation was out four lengths from Muratti and Carradale and then handy were .First Acre, Phar Lap, Star God, Balloon King, Shadow King, and Second Wind, with Tregilla third to last and Ycilmond last. At the six furlongs, Temptation had only two lengths’ lead from Carradale and Muratti, with Star God next just ahead of Phar lap, 'Second Wind and Shadow King. Temptation was in charge at the turn, and was first into the straight, Aluratti, Carradale, and Phar Lap following. Phar Lap tool: the lead at two furlongs, and won running away, with three lengths to the good, the third horse three-quarters of a length away.
