BOROUGH AFFAIRS

MEETING OF COUNCIL The fortnightly meeting of the Gisborne Borough Council was held last evening, the .Mayor, Mr. lb \Y. Coleman, presiding. There wore present also: (As. jf. E. Al ancle, J. AV. 11, Holmes, G. Bradley Smith, S. \ r . ißeautuy,' F. Collin, AV. J. AlacGibboti, and ii. 11. DeCosta. Mr. F. E. Wallen wrote requesting the council to extend the sewei? main along Buivvcr road for a. distance of RjCt’t.—Tho matter .was referred to the works committee, Mr. J. T. Grilfen wrote complaining of the condition of the roadway in George street, and requesting ’ -that aftefition should be..given to. it.—. The. mutter was referred to" the works ‘committee. " Mr. George 'Smith applied for permission to convert a dwelling in Grey street into four apartments. —The application was referred to tho works committee. The Audit Office returned the balance sheet of the council, approved, with the following exceptions, “That there is rn> authority of law lor the remission of rates amounting to £l9 10s in respect of the Edward Murphy Memorial Home, and a recovery of the amount is required.; and that 'the limit of £4O fixed by the Alunicipal Corporations Act for expenses incurred' by delegates to the Alunicipal Conference has been exceeded by Al 3s Bd, and a refund of that amount to the district fund is required, in a covering letter, the deputy-Con-troller and Auditor-General asked the council to take immediate steps -to have the exceptions attended to, —The letter was received.

REPORTS ENGINKER.'SI DEPARTMENT The engineer, Air. G. Ei, Barton, reported inter alia: — “Unemployment relief work. —AVainui road: The Government subsidy of £742 ou tho foundation..course has been.paid. The bitumen grouted course will probably lie laid during November. Levelling aerodrome site: The work completed, and application has-gone forward for tlie' Government suosidy of £IBCO. Gladstone road: The tram-track has been lifted to Grey street. Ihe excavation for flic concrete, slab.is..completed with the exception of-small portions .at .the intersection of .Peel street and Bi'igiit' street. " Within th&“ next day or two the concrete slab will .bo completed' to Grey street; . The intersection of Gladstone road and Read’s quay has been scarified, and the whole of liie intersection will be laid in quicksetting cement. Re-forming of margins of concrete is proceeding satisfactorily, about 50 per cent, of the work befog finished. The road is being opened for traffic as the curing is competed. AleRae baths: Plans and specifications are under consideration by the Public Works Department. As soon as approval is received Hie work can be put ni hand. “Stormwater drainage loan .work's. — Grey street: The stormwater drain in Orev street, east side, from Childers' road to Gladstone road, including sumps, has been completed. Disraeli street-: The stormwater drain in Disraeli street, from Aberdeen road to the Tavuheru River, lias been completed. Kerbing and channelling at Cash Storoj?,. The wooden kerb is. being lowered to suit the work,”

WORKS COMMITTER The works committee reported inter alia:— • “The engineer Submitted details of municipal works to be undertaken during tho fortnight, the principal fines being the continuation of relief works, Gladstone and AVainui roads construction, and general rqaintenance. Tlie Alacßae baths, will be put in hand so soon as approval has been received from; the Public Works Department. ... , “In connection with 1 Harbor Board building permits, the town clerk reported that other harbor boards had been written to, .and replies. .hftd bqen received stating' t hat Ike boards complied witli the borough by-laws in respect to buildings; generally contracts were let, and the contractor obtained the neces- 1 Kivy permits as ho would in any other case. It was, therefore, decided that the harbor board would have to comply With tho building by-laws, in respect to their sheds in course of construction.
