MOA BONES FOUND
WAIKAREMOANA DISCOVERY An interesting discovery has tieeh made at Waikaremoana by Mr. L. Bell, of Napier, who found some excellently preserved moa bones in a cave near the road between the outlet and Lake House.
Mr. Bell and another young man were exploring in the neighborhood, when they came upon the mouth of what seemed a small cave. By hanging a rope into the mouth of the cave they were able to descend into the depths, and found on doing so that /the cave was of considerable extent.
In exploring the cave they found a small slip of earth, from beneath which bones were protruding. When the earth was moved aside, more hones were discovered. Two specimens that were brought to Napier were examined by Mr. Henry Hill, who pronounces them to he the hones of a fairly large moa.
The cave was not only notable for the presence of moa hones, but also for'l lie brilliant constellations of glowworms shining in the darkness. — Napier Telegraph.
