FARMHAND'S POSITION SELECTION BY BALLOT (Special to the Herald.) AUCKLAND, this day. That there are. many unemployed men in the city who are willing to accept work in'the country was illustrated when a farmer who had advertised for a farmhand was culled upon to make a selection from about 80 applicants. It was impossible for the advertiser to interview all the applicants. He spoke'to the men who looked most promising and finally selected about a dozen. In order to make a final choice be obtained their names, wrote them on slips of paper, and placed them in a hat. A man drew out a slip, and the successful applicant was announced. Another instance of the large number of applicants for work was furnished when the combined districts of Otahuhu, Papatpetoe, and Mnnurown sought a traffic, inspector. One hundred and fifty applications were received for tho post.
