ANZAC DAY
SERVICE AT MEMORIAL BIG PARADE EXPECTED It is expected that to-morrow's parade in connection with the Anzac Day observance in Gishorne will be one of the largest of recent years, for the units usually represented' propose to be on parade in fuller strength than in tho past, and the territorials in particular are likely to turn out almost to a man, since the, colors of their regiment aro to be carried in tho procession. The units -will assemble between 9 a.m. and and f 1.30 a.m. in lower Ormond road and Stout street, ami will provide markers at 9.20 a.m.; they will march on then markers at 9.30 a.m., and the procession will move off with ample time to spare for the. march to the memorial, by way of Peel street, Gladstone, road and the Kaiti esplanade. The annual Anzac Day service, which has been growing in importance from year to year, will be held at the district War Memorial on Kaiti esplanade, commencing at- 10 a.m. Canon Packo will be. m charge of the service, and the address will be given by the Rev. Oscar Aliwrighi, with representatives of other denominations also taking part m the ceremony. The troops and other organisations on parade will form up in front and at the. sides of the. memorial in close ranks, and (ho use of loudspeakers will make the proceedings perfectly audible to all in attendance. In this respect the observance should be decidedly move successful than any held in the past, for the open-air speaking until this year has been carried on under great difficulties, and generally if has been impossible for those on the, outer fringes ol the gathering to catch more than an occasional word ,of tho addresses. The arrangements this year have been made possible by the co-operation of the Atwater-Kent and Webster Magna vox agencies.
Prior to the sounding of the bast Post, an opportunity will be given for the placing of wreaths at the base of tin; War Memorial. Local bodies' representatives will be. in attendance to place wreaths on behalf of their respective organisations, ami many fine floral emblems have been prepared for the occasion.
District centres will hold smaller ceremonies during the afternoon, in most of the areas on the Coast and in the country, and- in the case of Te Karaka service,- Mr. (r. K. Darton, vice-president of the Gishorne 8.5. A.. has been asked lo give an address.
