NEW BRIDGE WANTED
MARAETAHA PROPOSAL RESULT OP RAILWAY PROGRESS With the progress of the railway works near Muriwai, a bridge spanning the Maraetaha stream, 19 miles from Gisborne on the Gisborne-Wa iron, via Morere, main highway, is to be dismantled. Advieo to” this eifeet was placed before the Cook County Council in a letter from Mr. 0. G. Thornton, District Engineer, who wrote as follows: “The above bridge (Maraetaha bridge) js required to be moved very soon to enable the railway work to proceed. It is an old bridge, which would require renewing in two years at the most, and I understand that your council contemplates a bridge renewal loan in which provision would bo made for a share of the cost. A survey has been made in connection with the railway construction, qnd a new alignment effecting a considerable improvement in the approaches will remove an old source of complaint from motorists. “Plans for a 12ft bridge with concrete piles, steel girder spans and reinforced concrete deck have been completed. The estimated cost of the deviation and approaches is £7OO, and of the bridge £2i}l4. The matter has been placed before the Minister of Public Works and l the Highways Board. The Minister has approved of the cost of the approaches being borne by the railway vote and the Main Highways Board has agreed to subsidise the bridge on a £2 for £1 basis.
“I have, therefore, to ask if your council will pass a resolution agreeing to contribute one-third of ’the cost of the bridge, and will also indicate when the money will be made available.’’
