DEFENCE OF LONDON

SAFE FROM AIR ATTACK EXPERIMENTAL RAIDS LONDON, April 14. During the past fortnight London has been the focus of a series of the most intense air raids since Germany’s in war time. . . As a result of experiments, experts have decided that the defences are practically impenetrable. R.A.F. machines concentrated in a sustained effort to reduce London to ruins, though London, happily, was ignorant of the fact. The success of the defensive methods was largely duo to an instrument which recorded the strength of the invaders, their distance from the capital, the height at which they were flying, and other facts, which the authorities desire to keep secret. It is satisfactory fo learn that out of 50 11.A.F. maclunes employed only three machines had forced landings, these being without any casualties. On the second day of the manoeuvres the attackers penetrated the defences, but were driven off in a few minutes with heavy losses, and the effects of their bombings were minimised by the promptitude with which the ground forces scattered all possible targets. Camouflages were erected and decoys placed in position; vulnerable points were protected, and the machines rushed from their hangars. Throughout, wireless codes played a most important part in assisting the defence.
