MAORI SETTLERS
GOVERNMENT TO ASSIST While at Taumarumii, the Minister of Native Affairs, Sir Apirana Ngnta, announced that he had already decided to settle two blocks of native land in the King Country, one at Waimiha and another at Mnlioenui. The Minister said he would also inspect land in the Pungapunga and Taringainotu districts. An area of 3500 acres would be set aside for native settlement at Waimiha, 10 young men being selected to begin the work of cultivation. He fully expected that the natives would be carrying on dairying at Waimiha next season. If they did not use .their land, in all probability it would be taken away from them. The time was coming when the natives would have to get on the land. It was his earnest desire to see them become industrious. All genuine applications for assistance would receive every consideration, and wire, stock and implements would be supplied to Maoris desiring to go on the land.
