Mr. J. Sythcs, of the Government Audit Department in Gisborne, has received notice of transfer to the Dunedin office, and will leave Gisborne about a week after Easter. Pleasure was expressed at, to-day's Rotary luncheon at the announcement that Rotarian Charles Adair was making good progress towards recovery, and hoped to be able to attend the functions at an early date. Rotarians to-day welcomed a new member, Mr. C. O. Hansen. Rotarian Hansen, as manager of tho Gisborne branch of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., represents slock and station management. The Hon. (I. \V. Forbes announced to-day the approval by the GovernorGeneral of the appointment of Mr. 11. F. Johnston, of Wellington, and Mr. A. C. Hanlon. of Dunedin, to be King's Counsellors.—l'. A. Mr. John Andrews, of New Plymouth, celebrated bis 88th birthday last week. Mr. Andrews was born six weeks after the arrival of the shiji Tiinandra at New Plymouth in 1842. He is a, Maori War veteran, and fought at the Battle of Waircka. He has rendered yeoman service in the foundation of New Plymouth. The Rev. G. W. Shepherd, who left Dunedin last. August with his three children, arrived safely back at his mission station early in October. Shortly afterwards there were rumors of Chinese Communists under tho leadership of dm Te, an able young graduate of Borlin Military Academy. Eventually they came, and Mr. Shepherd, with his wife and children, Mas forced to flee down the liver in small boats.
