MONEY IN SHIPS
BUT NOT ON CANVAS LONDON, Alarch 30. - There is more money in painting sailing ships than owing them, according to the sailor-artist Arthur Briscoe, who is at present holding a show in Bond street. He told a reporter that ho sold pictures worth £IOOO last week, which exceeds the annual profit of Gustav Erikson, the Finnish sailing ship king, from his windjammer fleet, Mr. Briscoe spends six months at sea every year in Finnish barques in the Baltic and North Seas, the West Indies trade, and sometimes round tho world v The remainder of his time is spent in painting pictures from shipboard studies. He says that the old square-rigger is the best subject for his art. “I took £3OOO in a fortnight’s exhibition in London in 1928—enough to buy a fullrigger,” he added.
