THE EASTER HOLIDAYS
THIS YEAR’S POSITION I PROXIMITY OF ANZAC DAY Business premises are usually well provided with holidays at Easter time, biit on this occasion shops will be closed no less than 4£ week days within eight days. The reason for this is the close proximity of Anzac Day to Easter. When inquiries were made at the Labor Department to-day, it was ascertained that shops covered by the Shop Assistants’ Award and the Grocers' Award .would close on Good Friday, Saturday and Easter Monday, April 18, 19 .and 21, which are compulsory holidays, while Anzac Day falls on the following Friday. These make four days on which the shops close, while a half-' day is to be observed the day before Anzac Day. It is provided that when two working days in the week are observed as holidays there is no necessity to observe the usual half-day. Next Ihursday, therefore, there will be no halfdwiiday, but rather an unusual position anses the following week. The shops will be closed on two days, but Anzac Day is officially regarded as a Sunday ar.d not as a working day in the meaning of the Ad. Therefore, a holiday- wall be observed on only one “working” day, Easter Monday, and this being so it will be necessary for the shops to observe the usual half-holiday on the Thursday. With Thursday the last shopping dav of next week, it is likely that it will be observed as the late shopping night in lieu of Saturday as is usually the case.
