CORRESPONDENCE
(To the Editor of the Herald.) Sir, On reaching Sydney after my tiigb! from tbigbind I approached the Australian representative of the Shell Co. 1 told him that my llight had been made for spoiling, not lor commercial purposes, and thai it was my particular wish that no unauthorised statements should be attributed to me. ,n fuel, 1 have never yet made any .tatemenl in praise of the fuel and oil products I used. I received an assurance thai my express wishes in tins Minlter would be respected. On arriving in New Zealand, 1 found that: lite Shell Co., without'any authorisation or offer of compensation, was making extensive use of statements wrongly attributed to me. as advertisement. I cabled protest to Fiigland and Aus■en I in. end protested here. As these ■l of cms have remained ut'diout reply I am obliged to appeal to publt.-ity to -■•: -he matter right. 1 used sjhell ifoi'.ucts, and can have no earthly obmcltou to their saying so. That, in itself, i.s not a bad advertisement, and they got it for nothing. Ido object, witli perfect reason, to statements be ing incorrectly attributed to me such is are calculated to make anyone believe that I am receiving something from the Shell Co.—l am, etc. FRANCIS 0. CHICHESTER.Sir, With reference to '.Mr. Chidiester's letter of April 7, wo are in-prised to learn that statements which have been attributed to .Mr. Chichester regarding the services ■endered by the Shell Co., in connection with his recent flight from Eng:nd to Australia, .should have led anyone to think that he bad received pavilion! in cash from this company. While ihe Shell Co. has lent the full ervires of ils organisation to assist lights of this description, it: is not its oractiee to make monetary payments •i connection therewith. So far as he Shell Co. is concerned, the fact 'ml Shell products were utilised 'hroughoul .Mr. Chichester's flight, is •mple tribute to (lie value of the Shell irgiiTiisat ion, and to the merits of ; he!l snirit and lubricating oil. The only statement attributed to "Mr. Chidieslor, which was used by the Shell Co. in its advertising, was a telegram •eeeiveil from its agents at Darwin, vim state that il was sent with Mr. 'liiehester's approval. Since that lafe, Mr. Chichester, in his press in'erviews and broadcast talks in Sydm'v, has been good enough to pay I'iluife to the assistance rendered by 'lie Shell organisation. Yours etc., "or lb" Shell Company of Now *• i nil. Limited. H. T. HIXD.MARSH.
