OBITUARY

MISS MARGARET HOWITT LONDON, April 9. Tim death is reported of Aliss Margaret Ilowitt, aged 90, authoress and .sister of the pioneer, Arthur Howitt, who discovered the remains of the Australian explorers, Burke, Wills and Charlton. Air. Howitt was drowned while participating in an expedition to Lake Brunner, New Zealand. MR. S. H. GOLDSMID (Received April 10. 10 a.m.) LONDON, April 9. Air. Sidney Hoffnung Goldsmid died to-day as a result of a heart seizure when leaving the St. James’ Club, where he had dined. He fell into the arms of a friend and died. The late Mr. Goldsmid was a son of the late Air. S. Hoffnung, of Sydney and London, and married a daughter of Sir J. Goldsmid, whoso name he took in 1896. He was connected with several charitable organisations in London, and during the war served with the Red Cross. Air. Timothy Ring, a Maori War veteran, died at Hawera Hospital recently, aged 89 years. Bom in County Cork, Ireland, in 1841, the late Air. Ring enlisted in 1864 in the Horse Guards, later transferring to the 18th Royal Irish Regiment. He sailed for New Zealand the same year in tho ship Nelson, and arrived at Wanganui. He was in action in most of the wars' in tho Taranaki district, and, returning to England, was discharged at Plymouth in 1870. Marrying in 1872 in County Cork, be later left for New Zealand with his wife and child in the ship Tweed. He settled in Oamaru, and was one of Hie pioneers of that district. A veteran of the Maori Pioneer Battalion of the N.Z.E.F. passed away this morning at the Cook Hospital, after an illness extending over the last 15 months. The deceased, Air. John Aliromiro, 38, was a member of a Ruatoria family, and enlisted in Gisborne during 1915, bis period of service being above the average. His illness had no connection with his war service.
