( Herald Correspondent.) At thi! Wairoa Hospital Board meeting Nurse Bennett, of Nuhaka, reported having paid 128 visits to patients, namely 67 to Europeans and 61 to Maoris, bhe had given 66 treatments at the dispensary, making 191 visits in all during ine month. .She visited Waikokopu, Mahia, Whakaki, Iwitea, and Nuhaka. The Wairoa County chairman, Mr. -V. G. Nolan, who has been on a holiday for the benefit of his health, is expected back at an early date.—Mr. Henry Hill, of Napier, who has rendered many years’ service in the cause of education, lias been re-appointed the Wairoa County representative on the Napier High School board of governors.—Mr. A. G. Smith, Wairoa County engineer, who has been indisposed for some weeks, is about again.—At the Wairoa County Council meeting, Cr. W. J. Hi 1 was appointed acting chairman, and Mr. E. V. Lane, assistant clerk, acting clerk and treasurer. The latter takes the place of Air. B. G. Signall while the latter is on leave owing to his recent, bereavement.

Prior to the commencement of business of the Wairoa County Council on Wednesday the acting-chairman, Mr. W. J. Hill, moved, “That a vote of (’(indolence be passed to Mr. and Mrs. B. G. Signall in their recent bereavement, and that a letter embodying the same be forwarded to Air. Signall.’’ The motion was carried, all standing. At 3.15 p.m. yesterday there occurred what many people took to he a lire alarm from the freezing works. However, it was found that at the close of the “smoko” the whistle declined to stop blowing. Signall in their bereavement. The Public Works Department was granted the use. of the “monkey" at the Heads. Messrs. Richardson and Co. complained of the heavy port charges at Wairoa, but members considered that these compared favorably with other ports. Captain Bongard wrote thanking the hoard for the use. of B shed for military training purposes. It. was left to the chairman to have the rails at tlie Heads removed to town. A grant of £1 Is was made to the, Eire Brigade funds. Two enthusiastic anglers, Messrs. V. .1. Mu Ison and A. J. Anderson, had some good sport in the Waikarotnheko this week, landing a number of fine raiifbow trout, the largest scaling from ‘JJlbs to lllbs. The Public Works Department has advised the county authorities of the payment of the following sums: Highways subsidy, £4llO 18s sd; Putero block road, £558 18s 7(1; Botopain. £7O; timber, £2. Authority has been teceived hv the council for the following amounts: Highways, £4OO 6s 8d ; Putero block road, £266 IBs 8(1; Waihua Valiev road, £ls, £1 for £1; Erepeti road. £l4O, free grant. Sympathy with Mr. and Mrs. I>. (I Signall, and regret at the passing of a bright young life in the person of Master “Tim” Signall, was the mil standing feature of the funeral service on Tuesday afternoon. The cortege was one of the Lrgest seen in the (list riel for many years, there being between f;0 and 60 cars, and the hoarse, was piled high with many beautiful wreaths, sent from all parts of the district, including the Count,v Council, Power Board and other local bodies, Waiioa District High School, City Cricket Club, and the Juvenile Druids’ Lodge. The first, portion of the scrviie was conducted at St. Paul’s (Anglican) Church, which was crowded to the doors, by Archdeacon Butterfield. At the close of the service the Archdeacon addressed the boys pres out. r Flie pall-bearers were members of the Druids’ Lodge, of which the deceased had been a member. As the hearse moved away it passed through two long lines of school children standing at attention, under the charge of the teaching staff. At the cemetery as the final rites were carried out there were many tear-dimmed eyes. Mr. Gordon Taylor, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Taylor, of Whakaki, is making good progress after an operation. —Air. J. A. Potltan, of Te Pohnp, and formerly in business iri Wairoa, is visiting the district,—Mr. K. Stewart, is ori a fishing expedition to Wniknremoana. —Messrs. J. T. Hendry and S. Hilson, of Dunedin, are on a cycling tour of the Wairoa district.
