PRIVATE HOTELS' AWARD ARBITRATION COURT DISPUTE (l'or Press Association.) WELLINGTON, hist night. Witnesses called by employers in the private hotels dispute before' the Arbitration Court to-day expressed theniselves as opposed to th<- insertion of a compulsory daii'so in the new aware) permitting union seerelarie.s to go oil employers' premises' oiieo a \vek to interview employees. They considered that it was a inatler which should be left to an amicable .arrangement. ! The union, said Mr. S. E. Wright, had made numerous claims, but had I brought forward no evidence to support i them. There had been iu> ■evidence to show that (lie hours asked For by the union were workable or convenient. Mr. Kennedy had relied on ancient history to establish his claim in pegavd to wages, quotingi the basic wage as his only argument. In regard to the. cost of living, clothing and drapery were cheaper, but food, which attoutcd the employers, was dearer. The employers had shown a good case for probationers ill the kitchen and dining room. The definition regarding plates was a serious matter, for it was not reasonable to pick out. a. portion of the crockery and say the washing of it was kitchen maids' work. There had been no changes in the conditions since the last award was made to justify granting 11 to claims of the union. Mr. .Kennedy also reviewed the evidence, which, he contended, supported the union's claims. The court's award will be made later.
