DISASTROUS BLAZE

A lire occurred shortly before 1 o'clock this morning in wooden premises in the centre of the business area/known as the Cosmopolitan Buildings, owned by Mr. Leo JSi.ein, and occupied by several tenants. Tlie structure was; badly gutted at the back, and the loss to the occupants of the premises on the ground floor by smoke and water is estimated to run into a substantial figure. The liro apparently started downstairs, and the flames ran up to the roof, the brigade being occupied for the best pari of an hour before it was under control. Fortunately, the night was calm; otherwise a disastrous conflagration would have been certain. The occupants affected, and the insurances are: Miss Dillon, milliner, stock and fittings, £227 in the State office; ■Messrs. A. Hannah and Co., ladies' outfitters, stock'£soo in the South British; Messrs. R. L. Bartlett, and Co., boot importers, stock £3OO in the South British, .£950 iir the State, and £250 in ' the State on furniture and effects ? damage mostly due to smoke and water; Messrs'. A. Hendry and Co., confectioners,'stock £350 in the South British;' Mr. W. Chick, dentist, fittings, £2OO in the Nor 1 - wich Union and £2OO id" the Alliance; Mr. George Peters, tobadebnist and hairdresser, in the Royal Exchange Office, the amount being unknown; Messrs. Watson and Sinclair, drapers, in whose premises the outbreak *jg presumed to have originated, on the stock £llOO in the Royal Exchange; Miss McPhail/ dressmaker; no insurance. The building was insured in the Alliance Office for £4400, and in the New Zealand Office for £I6OO, and plate glass in the New Zealand Office, also for £l5O.
