WAIKOHU COUNTY ROADS

ENGINEER’S REPORT Roadwork* carried out iu the county during the past month were reported upon by the engineer, Mr. A. 0. Lucas, to the \Vaikohu County Council at its monthly meeting at Te Karaka today in the following terms:' — “Motu ridingi The contractor tor fonning and metalling on the Moanui road has completed his contracts. The contractor for forming' and .spawling 111) chains of the Matawai-Hangaroa road has completed his contract, and i's new engaged on the contract for blinding the portions of the Koranga highwav. A portion of illianis road has been laid with spawls and rolled. The culvert and filling to replace Lynch’s bridge is completed, and the teams will be put on to ease one or two bad places' on the Koranga highway, and metalling required between Mortieiuan \s bridge and the foot of Junction hill. Metal depots have been iput out between Matawai and the boundary on the main highway. A start will be made shortly to complete the topdressing between Motuhora and Matawai. Maintenance work has been carried out as usual in this ridinsr. “Waihuka riding: About one mile of the ton course metal on the main highway is still to bo completed. A groyne will be put across the Waihuka stream at >Swarbriek’s this week, and the one under the viaduct strengthened. Tint contractor for metalling the Makaretu road will start this week. A Hunu* about one chain long ami a small temporary bridge were erected at Boggy (fully. Tenders were called for to-day for maintenance metal for Wright’s hill and the Poututu flat. The grader is now engaged on the Rakauroa-Tahora road. Poster’s bridge has been completed, and traffic is now using the through road. A team is engaged trimming up the Ilihiroroa road in this Tiding. Maintenance work lias been carried cut. in the usual manner.

“Mangatu riding: A team was engaged metalling where required on the Mangamaia road. Tenders tire called for to-day for metalling on the Mangatu roaiii The usual maibte fiance work has been attended to.

“Waipaoa riding: A start has how hcc-n made with tho filling at the M*an■ galdno culvert. .Some patching was done on the Puha-Wluitatutu highway. The contractor for metalling on the Armstrong road is .making good progress. A new surfaceman has been taken up to tho Huiarua road, and timber to build a feed shed has also been sent up. Timber has been sent up to make a bridge at Ilastie’a and to widen one at the blue slip. The •carpenters are now engaged doing up the surfaceman’s cottage on the river road. The cutting on the Waitangi road is now available, but ft little forming is necessary out on to the road.

“Ngatana riding: The contractor for mile one has completed his contract, and also took over and completed the mile two contract left uncompleted last year. The contractor for forming the last mile is making slow progress, still having 55 chains to complete. Advice has been received that the Minister of Public Works approves of the £IOOO, £2 for £l, grant for tdip-course metal ft am Rcrc to Mr, .Roberts. The chairman, Or. Morice, and I inspected the roads in the riding, and met the Settlers’ Association at" Mr. Williams’ woolshed. Maintenance work lias been carried out as usual in this riding. “Kanakanaia riding: Forty-three •chains of metalling have been completed at the to]» of the Kanakanaia hill. Tenders are called- for placing groynes in the Waihora River on the Wa'ihora valley road (Bruce’s) to improve the fords. The grader has been trimming up the metal bn the Knnakdinaia road.. Maintenance work as usual has been carried out. “Karaka riding: The deviation at mile 20.4 is nearly completed, and tipmetalling has been carried as far as possible, being river the worst portion, and no trouble Is...anticipated if til? weather breaks. The contractors have not made it start on the inetfll ling of the main road, tis they ate working on the deviation metalling job. The culvert has been put in under the road at Pitcher’s road, and the men are engaged on the making of the drain. Levels wore tak on on: Lhvcnhom road in front of the works cottages and yards, and it is .found that fall could be obtained for a drain. I interviewed Mr. A. •Smith in refer once to a culvert blocking tho drain at Waipaoa, and was informed that he would attend to the matter. the grader has been engaged trimming in metal. Men and teams have been put on the Mangaoae road to make same passable for drays. The- surfaceman has been engaged patching and cleaning water-tables. “General: Owing to the amount of grading work now required on the roads and highways I would ask sanction for the purchase r.f another tractor and grader.” /
