BROADCASTING STATION

OPENED IN WAIROA

There. was a large and representative assemblage on the lawn at the residence of Mr. and .Mrs. A. Perry, Queen street, for the ollieial opening of Wairoa’s lirsL broadcasting station 2/,l\ The Municipal Land was in attendance, and contributed not a little to the success of the function. Ihe gathering included a number of ladies and young people. The Mayor, Mr. It. T. Esther, was present, and to him lei! the task of opening the station.

The station is known in radio circles as 2/1’ and is owned and operated bv Mr. E. A. Perry, sun of Mr. and Mrs. A. Perry. It lias been allotted a wavelength of 365.6 metres, and lor some time has been operating successfully, having been heard as far south as l'uraugahau, E’ketahuua and Shannon, and also in the Poverty Bay district.

The young operator explained the nature of the function, and thanked the people for their attendance, and flic band and its conductor, Mr. B. Matson. The ollieial announcer, Mr. A. I. Isdale, carried nut his part very clearly.

The Mayor said he had been assured by listeners of the excellent quality ol the broadcasts. The range of I he station had exceeded expectations. in establishing the station Mr. Perry was rendering a great service to Wairoa, a service which lie felt sure residents would imt bo slow lo appreciate. Apart from the scheduled transmissions of the station, great possibilities were opened up in the way of broadcasting sporting events*, public functions and the like. The station was a public asset, and would benelit Wairoa in no small degree b v making it. bettor known outside (lie coniines of the district. Prom every point of view Mr. _ Perry was to be warmly congratulated on his enterprise,, and when he (the speaker) referred to him as having rendered yeoman service to the community he was sure lie had the warm support of every radio listener. Mr. Esther then declared the station open. The operator, Mr. A. Perry, gave an interesting resume of the origin of the station, mentioning that Wairoa now filled up fhe gap in other programmes —noon till 1.20 p.m.—so that listeners-in could have music at lunch time. The station would prove, that, there was plenty of music in Wairoa. Mr. ,T. S. Wilson would give out the sports results. Mr. ■]. S. Wilson spoke of the sports section. Mr. A. Perry, sen., as well as Mr. Perry, jun.. thanked the band and the performers for their efforts. The junior operator, Master Don Wilson, son of Mr. and Mrs. ,T. S. Wilson, spoke. Mr. H. K. Stanton gave a lengthy address on tho radio as affecting the press. Mr. T. Lambert said the opening of the station was an important event in the history of Wairoa.

It was reported during the afternoon that Gisborne bad heard ICO per cent, of the programme, and Mr. Abbott, of Napier, reported that the reception was good.
