ALTITUDE OF 9438 FT.
ALPINE RENDEZVOUS NEW HUT ON MT. EGMONT (Par Press Association.) HAAVERA, this day. The culmination of a month’s sustained effort; was readied during the week-end, when a hut on Fanthanvs Peak-, MR Egmont, was completed. Situated at an altitude of 9488 ft., it will provide a lofty rendezvous for skiing and general alpine recreation, and has accommodation with sleeping mmrtcrs for JO persons. In altitudo the hut is second only to the Haast lmt nt. Aft, Cook.
The portage of the whole of tho materials from Dawson’s Falls, 3100 fed. to the site of the hut was arranged voluntarily by the •members of the Egmont Alpine Club, at whose suggestion the south committee of tho Egmont Park Board arranged for tho creel inn of the hut. The portage has occupied club members in their spare time sinee ‘November. During an interview yesterday, Air R. O. Hooker, club president, and also secretary of the Park Board committee, said the hut should add greatly to the attraction of Egmont. Tho cost had been approximately £250, but had it been necessary to pay for portage the outlay would have been in th* vicinity of £6OO.
