Cattle Tick SO Years Ago An interesting reference in tin' introduction of cattle lick into Aew Zealand more tliaii ;>0 years ago is eont<aimat in a letter from u correspondent, Mi-. F. I[ipidersun, of fli sluirin', tic writes: “ Being interested in cattle tick as regards damage to hides, I would like to state that my father wrote to a niemlier of I’artiamcui as far buck as IN7-I giving liis opinion that the tick at that time came from the Chatham islands. ! never saw a Copy of the letter written, hut 1 saw a rep!v from the memiber acknowledging its receipt. I could not say lime my father reckoned the way the tick arrived in New Zealand.” The Freezing Season

The killings at the Kaiii freezing works during the next few weeks are expected to he comparatively small. The stock to be dealt with during the nex: few days is that purchased at fast week’s quotations, while it is not certain yet what the position will lie after these hive been finished, except that some farmers previously sidling on the hooks have decided to ship on owners’ account. There is every likelihood of an extended season, carrying the killings on in the end of done, whereas in. some years the season has 'been wound up a week or two weeks before that. Last year the works el used on dune till, while in 11)27 the closing date was as early as dune .IS, although in IP2N the killings continued until the end of dune. Butterfat Payments

In common with other dairying concerns, the Tolnga Lay Co-operative Dairy Co., Ltd., commenced the season with fairly high advances for butter-fat supplied, boding later that the payments had to..be considerably decreased. "This company was not fortunate enough to contract with any f.0.-h. sales on this occasion, nor did it participate in any of the high prices early in the season, but the company is in a sound position, and it will not be necessary for it To make any reclamations from its suppliers. The company Las been adopting the policy of selling small quantities of butter in London to keep its customers supplied, but .it has fairly substantial holdings, Home of which are in Mew Zealand. The following are the monthly advance payments -made by the company for the current season, those for 19282[i being given in parentheses: Septemlember, Is Id (Is -Id); October, Is 3id (Is 3d); .November, ,1s 3d (Is -lid); December, Is ltd (Is bid); .January, 1s lid (Is ml); February, Is (Fd (Is 3d); March Is (Is 4d). The .figure given for 'March is anticipated.

Absence of Beef Mu beef cattle have come forward for slaughter at Poverty Bay freezing works lately, and no quotations have been made in the district for beef for some time. The values went up to 37s lid per 1001 b. recently, and although shortly after that no quotations were announced, it was 1 indicated that i! would bo difficult to obtain 35s per 1001 b. The present Hawke’s Day price, it is believed, is

Store Sheep Market With the usual outlets for Poverty Day store stock proving unprofitable, sheep breeders have been looking elsewhere for markets. It was anticipated limit the several thousand sheep which were diverted from Addington would lie released on the Matawhcro market, but ,so far few of those have come forward, and last Friday’s sale was (he smalilest for some weeks. There were not many lines of good quality in evidence last Friday, the best sorts bringing satisfactory prices in view of the state of the various markets concerning the breeding of sheep, while good lambs, which were of small supply, were eagerly snapped up. Apparently the rates here are high in comparison with those obtainable elsewhere after the payment of transport charges, Tor no more sheep have been going away, except small lines to Westport, where there is a limited market for stores. Prior to this Westport had absorbed a few fat sheep from Gisborne, but as a store market the West Coast was tried for the first time a, few weeks ago. A further shipment of 500 head was .sent yesterday, together with 20 fat nows, which were bought at Friday’s sale at £!> a head. - ■ > ":
