A member of one of the Poverty Bay senior cricket games tested out most successfully in the competitions at the Oval on ’Saturday a home-made bat which lie recently received. The bat, an excellent piece of worK, was made by tho cricketer’s father, and with its aid the Gisborne player succeeded in compiling a total of 33, including one six and several fours.

The aero ball to be held on Thursday evening will bo the lirst important dance of the 1930 season, and there is every reason to expect that the Gisborne branch of the Hawke’s Bay and East Coast. Aero Club, under whose auspices thi' function will bo held, will set a standard which other clubs will find it dillicult to excel. The ball will be held in the wonderful carved meeting house, To Polio o Hewiri, at the Turanga pa. Kaiti, and prior to the function two days will be spent in preparing the floor, which will he sandpapered and polished. Although invitations are not essential, over 1200 have been issued fov the ball, and it is anticipated that the function will he one of the most largely attended and most- successful! in every way for a considerable period. The music will be provided by Chrisp’s orchestra, and special attention is being paid to the supper arrangements.
