THEFT OF £I7BO ADMITTED (Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, this day. In tlm Police Court this morning John James Arthur. 48. a married man with 11 children, appeared on live charges of obtaining money from John Bussell by false pretences. I lie amount involved was £I7BO, spread over a period ol nearly seven years. 'l’he evidence showed that the money bad been obtained from an elderly fellow employee who bail known the accused nearly all bis life. The accused led Russell to believe that Hie money was going to various people, being covered by mortgages. The accused, it: a statement to the police, said be bad been betting fairly heavily at. the start, and needed the money to meet bis obligations. He was in hopes of securing a big win and paying tbo money hack. Tin* accused pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Gourt for sentence, bail being refused.
