GREAT MILK TEST

SCHOOLCHILDREN TO BENEFIT LONDON, Feb. 16. Twelve thousand children in tho schools, under the jurisdiction of the Lanarkshire Education Authority, will from to-morrow, be supplied daily m Hie ensuing months with three-quarters of a pint of grade “A” tuberculin tested milk. Scientific data will be obtained from the manner in which the children will react to the diet. Mr Tom Johnston, ALP., inaugurating the scheme in Hamilton, said statistics showed that taken over two years tho increase in height and weight of tho child in receipt of milk diet was somclliing like 233.4 per cent, greater than Unit, of tho child not receiving a nnlk rut ion. The experiment over seven months showed that the average child receiving a milk ration was a quarter of an inch taller, and three-quarters of a pound heavier, than the child not on a milk diet. Tho present experiment was on tho largest scale which had _ ever been attempted in the history of the world.

There was another aspect to the scheme. What efTeet would the increased consumption of milk have on tho industry of agriculture, which was passing through very serious difficulties, and a very hard time? About one-third of that industry in Scotland depended on tho salo of milk, and it was very apparent, that the increased consumption would do a, very considerable service indeed to the harassed industry of agricult lire.
