W. B. MILLER TRUST

FIRST ALLOCATIONS MADE PROMOTING SPORTS FACILITIES The occasion of the return of Mr. W.. Harrington Miller to Gisborne for a" few days recently was made memorable for amateur sports bodies by the establishment of a trust fund of £ICOO for the promotion of interest in all forms of sport on the amateur side. In his earlier* years here Mr. Miller had been prominently associated with sports bodies and the promotion of functions, and the establishment of the trust was an earnest of his continued interest, in his old associations. In the appointment of trustees for the fund, Mr. Miller gave careful consideration to the need for representation of all forms of sport, and, once chosen, the trustees were given an entirely free hand with the principal amount of the fund, and also with the interest which might accrue on any portion of it.

'lhe first meeting of the trustees was held yesterday, there being present: Messrs. ]). W. Coleman, Mavor, F. W. Nblan. P. Foote. J. McLeod. H. E. Maude, J. S. Wauchop, and W. R. R. Willock. Mr. F. W. Nolan was elected chairman of the trust, and it was decided to have the trust deed printed and circulated among all- amateur sports bodies which might be likely to need assistance from the fund. Four grants were decided upon, to meet urgent needs within the knowledge of trustees present, these being as under:— ' A sum, estimated at £150,-sufficient to purchase a triplex mower to be allocated tor the benefit of the board of control tor the Oval. , ■ ■'■■'• .., •. >\

A grant of £25 to the Poverty Bay School Sports Association to provide material for winter games. ' ;

A grant of a sufficient amount to provide a permanent trophy for third-grade football club competitions. A grant of) £2O for the purchase of a roller for use on the High School playing fields. The nature of the allocations listed above indicates that the trustees do not regard the fund as simply for the provision of cups and trophies for competition, but are placing a broader interpretation ipon the clause of the trust deed which directs that the fund shall be available for the promotion of sport by means vhich seem to the trustees most likely to have, permanent results. The four objects served by the initial allocations •ire regarded as highly worthy ones, and, moreover; the expenditure of portions of the fund in these respective directions is alculated to benefit indirectly the town of Gisborne. The provision of facilities 'or the care of the High School playing Helds and the Oval are of particular interest to many citizens whose interest in athletic and field sports may have faded, but who regard the playing areas as important adjuncts to the municipality.
