USING COARSER WOOLS
MAKING OF WOOL PACKS A. AND P. PRESIDENT'S VIEW A suggestion, which, if found feasible and put into operation, should be the means of disposing of a large quantity of the coarser and inferior wools remaining unsold in the Dominions and keeping much mor-e money in the country, was made to-day by Mr. R. W. Coop, president of the Poverty Pay A. and P. Association, when in conversation with a pressman. Mr. Coop's suggestion was that tho coarser wools and pieces and bellies should be made in New Zealand into wool packs. Mr. Coop maintained that the Government should make an investigation into the suggestion of making such packs in New Zealand. He could not say how the price of such packs would compare with those manufactured from jute, but he explained that jute packs at present cost between 5s and 6s. About five, years ago the manufacture of wool packs from wool was tried in Bradford, and a specimen was on view for some time in the A. and P. Association's office. It was maintained, however, that the all-wool wool packs were not a success, for they "bellied" out too much.
At that time the cost, too, was greater than those made from jute, he said, the packs made from wool being in the vicinity of lis. That, however, was at a time of high wool prices, but now that the values of wool were so low the cost should be a great deal less than when this type of pack was tried previously, •fome improvements might since have been effected in the method of manufacture which should make this type suitable for general use.
It might be possible to make the packs with hemp and wool, of wool alone, he added, and he thought the suggestion well worth investigation by the Government or some other responsible authority, in order to determine the feasibility of the proposal. Now that the coarser and inferior types of wool were so low m value, it would be a good time to test jut the suggestion, and if the packs were made in New Zealand it would keep a threat deal of surplus wool off the market.
