THE NEW OAKLAND
V TYPE 8-CYLINDER ENGINE Details of the now Oakland eightcylinder car were made public to-day. The announcement discloses a car not only capable of setting new standards for power, speed, acceleration, long life, riding comfort, and economical operation, but also new beauty of ex* lerior and interior design. The engine develops 85' horse-power at peal speed, and the 'car is good for bettei than 7(> miles per hour. The new engine is claimed to deliver praeti cally as many miles a gallon as did the six-cylinder engine. While the Oak land engineers have built good per formance into the new car they hav< ensured its long life, for whew tht car reaches its maximum 85 horse power the engine is making only 300( revolutions per minute. At 35 mile; an hour the engine speed is onlj 1848 r.p.ni. Relatively slow engine speed is recognised as the greatest (single contributing factor to long life Another factor contributing to lon| (-'.gine life is the short stroke of on-lj 3.3/Sin., and this means less wear and tear upon moving parts. Both these factors contribute to Jow operating costs, and a reduction of service operations. The Oakland eight has an engine synchroniser which permits the engine to "float" in flexible mountings within very definite ,and narrow limits, but prevents any tendency to swing violently on rough • roads. Valves are located horizontally, providing greater accessibility and permitting a compact and efficient engine design as well as larger water jacket space around the valve seats. The cylinder head is of an exclusive angular, high-compression design. A down draft carburet ion system is used. The wheel'baso remains at,ll7in. Ease of steering, road visibility and braking have been given particular attention. The engineers have produced an entirely new car with each feature designed to co-ordinate with the new power plant. Roominess of front and rear compartments, width and depth of seats, and richness of upholstery are in full keeping with the new car's I general quality.*
