SYNTHETIC WOOD
<» FURNITURE FROM COTTON LONDONER'S CLAIM LONDON. Fob. 22. A remarkable discovery by which furniture ami all kinds of house fixHues can be manufactured from cotton is claimed to iuive been made by a Olcrkcnwoll (London) resident. "I experimented for four years before discovering the secret, which is wonderfully simple," explains the inventor. "The synthetic wood I have produced is a compressed and hardened cotton material containing 90 per cent, or' cotton. "Synthetic wood cambe made of any .thickness and moulded info any shape.
It can be sawn or turned on a latin like wood. Screws and nails can Indriven into it. It is much lighter than wood, but stronger; and the weight and strength can be varied as desired. "Furniture can be made either by sawing and chiseling the materiallike timber, or by making the sections with stampings, and then fixing them together. The latter method would facilitate mass production. "Synthetic wood can be polished as smooth as glass, or may 'be given a dull finish. It can be 'made absolutely indistinguishable from mahogany, oak, walnut, or any other wood. "The cotton material can bo used for any purpose for which wood is used, such as ceilings, floors, panelling, doors, motor car bodies, furniture, loudspeakers and a hundred and one other purposes. " It may ibe decorated by carving or inlaying, and does not warp under the
1 influence of undue heat or damp. It ! will hold water and makes delightful i flower bowls, which can be lacquered or finished in any desired style. "One may even have a mahogany flower bowl —a thing I have never ■seen in wood. "The cost of synthetic wood is far below that of timber, and its 'life' is at least as long. It would materially reduce the price of houses as well as of furniture."
