DUAL PURPOSE COW
VISITOR EXTOLS SHORTHORNS An advocate of the dual purpose cow, Mi'. Alexander Maclaren, of Buckingham, Quebec, told a Dominion representative of points concerning the ShOHhorn breed as a dual purpose cow. "1 have long been a firm believer in the beef and milk type of Shorthorn," he said, "I long ago concluded that the Shorthorn cow which would function as a liberal producer of milk, and whose animal produce could be developed into prime beef, where such a method proved desirable, is an economic necessity on farms where mixed farm in g is tho rule.
"My observations have quite clearly convinced mo that the beef type of bull is of iv phlegmatic disposition, whereas the strictly milking type is of a highly nervous disposition. Consequently in brooding for the dual purpose type where milk and beef are looked for. temperament, I believe, should be taken into consideration, and I have endeavored to so direct my breeding operations to bring about the desired results in this regard."
