PLUNKET SHIELD

AUCKLAND'S BRIGHT BATTING

(Por Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day

Tho Plunket Shield match, Wellington v. Auckland was resumed to-day in glorious weather. Mills (20) and Anthony (13) continued Auckland's second innings, to the bowling of Henderson, who opened from tho southern end, and McU'irr, who was bowling with the wind. The batsmen started confidently, both scoring with well-placed shots. After 10 minutes Anthony reached 30 by cutling McGirr through tho slips for four. In Henderson's third over Hollings dropped Anthony in the slips. Henderson's fourth over was scoreless. Sixty appeared on the board after 20 minutes. Gallichan then relieved Henderson, who had bowled six overs for 23 runs. The change had little effect on the scoring, and the total mounted steadily. Mills reached 40 after half an hour, and Anthony also reached 40, and sent 90 up by' cutting McGirr for a single. Lowry took over from Gallichan, whose three'overs had cost 18 runs. McGirr was causing the batsmen little difficulty, and'when Anthony drove him for four, 100 appeared after the innings bad been in progress for an hour. McGirr, off whom 44 had been scored in 13 overs, then gave way to Massey. Lowry was bowling round the wicket with'eight men on tho leg side. These tactics kept the batsmen quiet. At midday Anthony played on a ball from Massey. He'had g'iven a bright display, his total including seven fours.— IB}—l —56.

Scoring was slower for a period, Lowry keeping the runs down, and Massey bowling a good length. Mills reached 50 after batting for 85 minutes. Play was not as attractive as previously, the batsmen having difficulty in getting the ball away. Only 10 runs came off Lowry's first nine overs. At 12.30 p.m. tho score was 137, Mills being 56 and Weir 20. Weir endeavored to brighten matters by opening out to Lowry, but could not connect properly. When ho was 21, Weir cocked one. up from Massey, but tho bowler could not get to it. VVeir later became, aggressive, and met with more success in trying to fjpopp off Lowry, 14 coming off the Wellington captain's over.
