CONSTABLE & GANGSTERS SHOOTING AT CLOSE QUARTERS Although only 24 years of age, a New Zea lander. Constable Joseph Henry Jackson, of No. ,5 Police Zone. Sydney, has distinguished himself by his bravery while on duty. Constable Jackson, who arrived by the Ulimaroa this iveek from Sydney, en route to Greymouth, where he will spend his leave, with bis people, was actively concerned in the "cleaning-up'' of the biggest of the Darlinghurst shooting affrays. One night while on duty he had occasion t.o apprehend three notorious gunmen, (Jaffney (since murdered). Francis Green, and .Archer. Gaffney held him .up at the poinl of a revolver while Jackson, who was wearing a heavy coat, prepared for action with bis own revolver which was in his pocket. He kept Gaffney talking, when suddenly the latter tired, but the shot wenl wide. Jackson returned the. tiro. but bis shot also missed: bill a second shot hit the ei'bok's shoulder. However. Gaffney managed to escape. Archer and Crecn't.hen fired at Jackson, but (heir shots, too. went wide. Jackson look another shot at Archer and although the latter was grazed on the temple, he managed (o make bis escape. Jackson's action, which was warmly' commended by the Commissioner and oi her officers of the. Police Force, was the means of linking up important clues which, after Gaffney'a murder, led to the clean-up of the. gangsters in Surrey Hills and' WooUomooloo, who had hitherto baffled the. police. Jackson is also regarded as one oi" thehesf police witnesses in the State. -'-Dominion.
