OLD MAORI CANOE
FOUND IN lIUTT VALLEY (pur Vress Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Recent I v a settler on Moera estate. Mutt Valley, while digging in his garden came upon the hull ol an old Maori canoe at a depth of Git. below the surface. II proved to be M)it. long and bit. wide, but bad never been finished. The authorities of the 'Dominion Museum had been negotiating ion its purchase, bill on a more complete investigation being made the relic was discovered to-be in such a decayed condition that ii would not he worth removal. Interesting speculations have arisen as to bow such a large canoe came to be le?t on what is now part of Moera settlement. None of the present-day Maori inhabitants of the Mutt Valley can remember a canoe being buried there, nor can tliev shed any light on the mystery.
