SHORTER WORKING DAY

BRITISH COAL MINES DISCUSSION IN COMMONS LONDON, Feb. 6. The House of Commons in committee on the Coal Mines Bill discussed the reduction of the working day to 7£ hours. The debate primarily ranged round Sir Hubert Horne’s amendment substituting for a rigid 7£-huur day, spread over 90 hours per fortnight, this to be coupled with an early start on Saturday to enable miners to work the full shift, and yet to be at liberty on Saturdays for football, dog racing, and other sports. Sir Robert liorno argued that compressing the hours into .11 days a fortnight would be a great advantage to the industry, whereas the 71-hour day would cost an additional Is 6d a ton. Mr. V. Hartshorn and other Labor members opposed the amendment, which was rejected by 292 votes to 197.
