NEW RAILWAY TOUR
JUNE TRIP FOR FARMERS SOUTH ISLAND DISTRICTS Mention was made yesterday of the paucity of information available concerning the proposed tour of the ■South Island by members of the forming community of Haw ice's Bay and' Poverty Bay. The paragraph apparently did less than justice to the enterprise of the Railway Department's officials, for, the itinerary of the projected tour, has been worked out in detail, and submitted through the. Farmers Union's branches for the approval of its members, and as soon as the department has some idea' of how many farmers are likely to make the tour, the organisation will proceed. It is suggested that June would be the best month for the tour, and that on the first day of that mouth the tourists should gather at Wellington, to take steamer for Lytteltou and rail to Christchureh, which city would be reached on Sunday morning, June 2. After a. free day in the Cathedral City, there would 'be a trip to Otira on the Monday, followed by another trip to Lincoln" College. On June i>, according, to the tentative itinerary, the party would leave, for Tima'ru, and thence proceed by easy rail journeys to Oauraru, Duiiedin, and the southern lakes centres. Motor trips will be included, in the itinerary, and the resources of the Otago and Southland districts will be unfolded to the northerners, who will spend some 10 days on the tour from Wellington iback to Wellington. Entertainment is also to be provided with the cooperation of the Farmers Union's branches in the South I-s.laiid, and the cost of the whole to.ur will not be in excess of £&5. per person, according to fne estimates provided by the department. The tour will embrace 1087 miles of railway travel, 340 miles of sea travel, and 50 miles of lake tours. The number of passengers will be limited to 2/30.
