ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIPS

P.B. GAIinS SUPREMACY

EXCITING CONTESTS

SUB-CENTRE RECORDS! BROKEN

Gisborne gained supremacy on the athletic track on Saturday afternoon when the second Hawke's Bay-Poverty

Hay sub-centre championship meeting was held at the Guilders road reserve under adverse weather conditions. It was one of the largest fixtures of its kind hold in Poverty Bay since the

appearance here of the American athletes in 1924. The attendance was estimated to be in the vicinity of 1200, the seating accommodation in the grandstand being filled, while many spectators assembled in the stand enclosure. Some 60 cars, the majority of which contained onlookers, were parked in a large circle beyond the cycling path. The meeting was commenced in dull weather, which later set in wet, but despite the elements a large crowd stayed till the finish.

The performances were splendid, and some of the races had thrilling finishes.

Altogether l 72 athletes from Napier, Hastings, Takapau, Waipawa, and Gisborne competed, the lastmentioned team gaming highest honors with 11 subcentre champions. The championship points were: Gisborne 85, Napier 48, Hastings 21. Waipawa 8. and Takapau 4. Hoth the sprint track and cycling path were in excellent condition, the lanes being plainly marked, while all arrangements were made for the field exponents. T. CO'RKERY'S DOUBLE Gisborne won both sprint titles with T. Corkerv. taking the century in 10 2-ssec. and the, furlong in 23sec. Tinder the circumstances, his performances were, excellent. After two false starts the field of six in the 100yds._ men's championship was successfully dispatched. M Fulford. the Napier representative and last' year's champion, establishing a short 'lead from Corkcry, who gradually overhauled the southerner. Corkerv was in front at the half-way mark, and, finishing strongly, won by one vard. L. J. Eddy, of Hastings, was third, inches further hack. Cork.ery's time was 2-ssec. better than that registered bv Fulford last year. _ In the 220yds. men's championship Corkerv never left the issue in doubt, and when the field turned into the straight be was well abend of the others. The Gisborne sprinter improved his position over the last 50yds., winning from Fulford (Nanier) and Eddy r bv 3vds. and 34yds. respectTvelv. "Again Corkerv made good time, clipping 1 l-ssec. off Eddy's sub-centre record, 24 l-ssec. MISS WILSON RUNS WELL

Competing against the leading lady athletes from Napier and Hastings, Miss Norma Wilson, ex-champion lady swinter of New Zealand and 1928 Dominion Olvmuic representative, gained nn easv win in the ICOvds. Inches' championship. Tn the final the representatives were: Gisborne Misses N. Wilson land C. McConnell; Hastings. Misses M. 'Henry and G. Svtnes; Napier. Miss E. Morton. Miss M. Lean, the Hawfee s Hay ladv champion, did not start owing to an injury sustained in her heat. After two false starts the five competitors had a perfect start, Miss N. Wilson, who was runnine on the inside lane, moved awav quickly from the others, and at the half-way mark she wn« leading Miss Kvmes by 3yds. Ihe Gisborne girl experienced no difficulty in winning against the strong wind, and making hdr own pace, breasted the worsted 6vds. ahead of Miss Symes. The remaining runners were well bunched The time. 12sec. was 2-ssec. outsulr the New 7enland record, eaualled bv Mi-s Wilson in her heat of the 100yds. handicap. Th» CWWne team. Misses N. Wilson. P Tier O McDonnell, and D. Dixev debated Nnnier and Hastings in H*o 440vds. Mies' relav chnmpionshin. wipninrr in 53 4-ssec, wliich is the time (.(."Hered bv th« Welliangton team |w **n it won the Etoveneauy Cup from 'OWwn-n* at the reserve on Anniversarv f)iv last venr. Several of the competitors in the visitincr teams were replaccc 1 .! hv Gisborne at Metes owinrr to injuries. VISITORS DO WELL

The Hastings representatives, L. J. Kddy and R. Verry, annexed the quarter and half-mile flat championships between them. In those events Gishorne badly needed the assistance of O. C, McDonald, who holds the records for hoth .distances The field was well bunched at the start of the quarter, but along the back straight Kddy went to the front, and thereafter the 'issue was never in doubt. Verry, who won the half-mile flat, finished second in the quarter with A. C. Bird [Napier) third. Eddy's time was 4-ssec. slower than ,that registered by McDonald last year, likewise was Verry s time for the half-mile by 6 4-Ssec., With the exception of R. Wallace, who gained second place in the halfmile the Gisborne representatives did not 'run up to expectations A. Owen finished fourth in the quarter, and IJ. Stevens fourth in the other race. IT R FTSKFjN'K BRILLIANCY

Both the mile and three-mile flat championships developed into thrilling finishes, H. R. Fisken (Gisborne) emerging the winnear on each occasion, llic excitement of the large crowd was intense as the runners approached the tape in the. three-mile contest and the winner was carried off the track shoulder high amidst loud cheering. At he bell, A G. Bradley (Takapau) was leading Fisken, but the latter commenced his characteristic finish along the back stretch. Bradley stayed behind for a while, but he, too, displayed a remarkable turn of speed over the last, part of the race, catching Fisken at the turn into the straight, They raced neck and neck towards the tape, and in a creat finish Fisken shot out m front to win by a. yard. W. Williamson was third, 'some distance back. _ W Hutchinson ran well in the onemile'event, though he was miable, to produce a finish capable of beating Fisken. Bradley finished third. Fisken s time. 4min. 46 4-ssec, was 7 l-ssre. better than that, registered by A. UMmall and Fisken in last year s contest 'the winner's time for the three™do was 57sec. better than/ A. Mitchells sub-centre record. Fisken is certain in tactics,-and possesses an easy style with his body bent slightly forward. Re takes short, crisp strides and produces a strong finish. THE CYCLISTS

Displaying greater spirit in his finishes, and careful judgment throughout the ratios, F. Robinson (Napier) ao-

counted for the half and three-mile cycle championships. Both contests had close finishes, the Hawke's Bay wheelman winning .from P. McMahon by inches only. McMahon turned the tables on Robinson in the one-mile race, the visitor finishing second. A. Campbell rode well to gain' third place, while, his brother, Thornley, finished third in the threemile event. In each race the times were slower than those registered last year, but on Saturday the conditions were against the cyclists. A spill occurred in the fifth lap of! the three-mile cycle event. A. M. Stevens (Hastings) fell right in front of the grandstand, bringing down C. Robson (papier), while P. Gouldie (Napier), who was riding close up on the firstmentioned two, rode over the prostrate body of Stevens without mishap and continued the race. Apart from a shaking, neither Stevens nor Robson was injured. F. ATKINS IN FORM The performances of Floyd Atkins in (ho shot putt and discus championships were" splendid, the Gisborne athlete win•pug both events comfortably; He tied with W. Findlay, Gisborne "in the polo vault championship, the pair clearing 9ft. 3in., wliich is oin. lower than Findlay's sub-centre, and Poverty Bay record.

Another dead heat resulted in the high jump, D. Coates (Gisborne) and A. Arnott (Napier) equalling sft. 2in. I'. KJaua won the hop, step, and jump title for Gisborne, jumping 41ft. 10in., equal to last year's record registered by G. Tait (Napier). N. Gillespie (Napier), who was second in the hop, step and jump, won the hroad jump with 21ftoin., which is l|in. better than W Heck's sub-centre record.

C. Geddes (Napier) annexed the hammer throw, his best effort being 89ft "3Jin. Atkins was second with 85ft 7£in. G. Pocock (Gisborne) scored in the. 120yds hurdles, in 19scf2. Last, year d. R. Webber •hushed second in Saturday's, race EXCELLENT ADMINISTRATION.
