PORT FACILITIES

SHIPPING CO.'S REQUEST PUSHING ON TRAINING WALL The steady increase in the shipping facilities at the port, and the most recent evidence of that advance given by the visit of the Waipahi, has created a public appetite for further results and greater progress. On tho other hand the shipping companies are anxious to secure stability in the proseut improved conditions, and are directing their attention to that object. To-day the Gisborne Harbor Board received from the Union Co.'s local manager. Air. H. V. Bell, the following communication: "Now that we are able to bring in steamers drawing a greater draught of wilier than formerly, we trust that iti will be possible to hasten the completion of the training wall where the water now rushes through the interstices at certain stages of the tide. Your board will readily appreciate lhat so long as these conditions obtain the entrance or departure of some of our steamers must be delayed, because Ihere would be an element of risk for them to face the side thrust of water in the narrowest; part of the channel on occasions similar to such as your members will doubtless have observed."

Tiie ehairnmti, Mi'; F. Tomblosori, commented that the point raised by the letter was an important one. The wall was still a long way from watertight. Mr. A. J. Nicol called attention to the fact that the engineer had touched on this matter in his report, which had not yet been before the meeting, but which all members had had the opportunity of perusing. The lettet was held over for consideration in conjunction with the engineer's report.
