MENACE TO NAVIGATION

HULK SUNK IN RIVER REQUEST FOR REMOVAL When the old river channel was haired by the new harbor work, the barge gate near the railway bridge was opened for shipping, and in order it) prevent (his gate being silted up, an oh! hulk, formerly the trawler Swan, was sunk at an angle which turned a current of water against the town side of the wall just on the up-river side of the. gate. To-day the Gisborne Harbor Hoard received an intimation that under existing conditions this hulk presents a menace to shipping, and a cause of delay in the traffic of the port. The intimation came in the form of a letter signed by six shipping company representatives, as under : "We the undersigned desire to bring under the notice of your board the urgent- need for the removal of the sunken Swan and the piles driven near the. gate in the training wall. Practical experience has shown that this obstruction is a continual menace to the small craft that still have to use- this side of the river, and its use is now questioned. A serious aspect is that in consequence of the above, overseas steamers are suffering delays because the owners of lighters do not care to accept the danger of, sending their craft through the gate at certain' stages of the tide while the above oh-f' striiction is in existence. Should your board desire to have some evidence in relation to this matter, we shall be pleased to send a small representation to meet a committee, but. we can, assure you the matter is urgent and important."

The chairman, Mr. J. Tombleson, recommended that the matter be referred to the advisory committee for a conference with shipping company representatives.

The proposal was seconded bv Mr. A C. Steele, and found support from .Mr A. Wade.

Mr. T. Corson held, that the hulk had been sunken in the wrong place, and certainly had been a menace to the shipping. Other members supported Mr. C. H. Williams' recommendation, that if Captain Carson, the harbormaster, considered the hulk a menace to navigation, it could he shifted without the necessity of a conference,

The chairman was given power to art in the matter.
