M. 0.0. MAKE 411 BRIGHT DISPLAY AGAINST H.B. {Pep Press Association.) NAPIER, last night. Perfect conditions prevailed for the commencement of the M.C.C. match against Hawko's Bay yesterday. The wicket was hard and fast. When Gilligan won the toss he decided to hat, and- then for the remainder of the day the largest crowd seen in Napier for several years witnessed a fine exhibition of hatting on the part of. the Englishmen, particularly Dulepsinhji, who gave easily his best display of the tour. Plis batting was an education, and the manner in which he played his strokes on both sides of the wicket was a treat to watch. Every stroke had tho finish and polish of a cricketer of.class. For his 342 he was at the wickets 189 minutes, and made 41 boundary shots. - ■• When Hawko's Bay secured the first three wickets for 107 runs, the prospects looked promising, but it was Duleepsinhji and Benson who put a different complexion on the game. Tho latter was content to play very steadily while, his partner made runs. Benson reached 55 in 107 minutes before he wont cat lbw The partnership realised 210 runs. \

After Gilligan and Duleepsinhji went, {lie batsmen went for tho bowling. Nichol's 46 was an attractive one, and then Woolley and Earle put on 50 in 14 minutes, Earle's total of 40 including five sixes. He showed himself to be a very powerful hitter. Both he and Woolley were caught on the boundary when attempting big hits. A word of praise is duo to the Hawke's Bay eleven for the excellence of their fielding. They had a heavy day's work, and if the batsmen gave any chances they were accepted. Hawke's Bay, with only 15 minutes to go, opened their innings disastrously, O'Brien chopping the first ball he received from Nichols into the wickets. 'Evans and Stephenson then played ■out ' time, and added 15 runs. MARYLEBONE CRICKET CLUB. First Innings.
