OBITUARY

marchioness of reading LONDON, Jan. 31. The late Marchioness of Reading, wife of the Marquess of Reading, exViceroy of India, had been ill ever since her* return from India with her Imshand. Newspapers speak of her■beneticient social work in India. -Through her energetic appeals, the sum ot £IOO,OOO was raised to endow a hospital in Simla for women and children and training nurses. She founded the Indian National Baby Week, which lias been instrumental in reducing the enormously high rate of infantile mortality in that country. When her health broke down she bad so won her way into the hearts of the people that prayers for her recovery were said in tii e temples, mosques, and synagogues throughout the country.

MR. DANIEL QUINN

An old resident of Gisborne, with more than 50 years residence in New Zealand, lias passed away in the person of Mr. Daniel Quinn, formerly of Mata where, and late of Palmerston North. The deceased born in Cookstown, County Tvroe, Ireland, and came to New Zealand as a- young man, about the year 1877, in the sailing ship May Queen. The late Mr. Quinn was a Well-known contractor in this district for many years, and was well respected in the community. He was prodeceased by -Mrs. Quinn many years ago, and was left with a large family, comprising six sons and live daughters, most of whom still reside in Poverty Bay.
