ON THE WAR PATH

CHffiF OP THE MOHAWKS m6m CANADIAN BOWLERS (Special to the Herald.) AUCKLAND, tins day. A nephew of a picturesquo American Indian chief tan, Sitting Bull, who played a consequential part in the history °i: North America, Mr. Jack Flahiff, arrived by the Aofangi from Vancouver to play howls. Known as '' His Royal Highness " and " Prince. Mr. Flahiff is as little like 1 a popular conception of a member of his race as can be imagined. Small of stature, he wears horn-rimmed spectacles, is taciturn, and declares himself to be no seeker of advertisement. He is the present-day chieftain of the Mohawk Indians, who live on the reservations near Paris, Ontario, and he 'is a' member of the local bowling club. He is married, and has eight children. One characteristic of his race is employed by Mr. Flahiff in the mild sport oi bowling. His fellow players vow that he has an eye like a hawk when he trundles a bowl near the kitty. On board the Aorangiho showed agility in winning a bullboard tournament. "His .Highness" is one of the most popular members of the Canadian bowling party, who commenced a tour of New Zealand at Whangarei to-day, ■whpn they met local rinks. This is lisfirst time on the "war path," and he is only looking for bowlers' scalps in friendly contests. He has never been absent from homo before, but though, ho- is now 7000 miles away his voice is still heard by his people. Prpr to his departure for the Dominion he had a message recorded for gramophone reproduction on Christmas Day, a gracious thought which is said to be typical of his nature. The Mohawk Indian settlement near Paris is one of tho largest in Canada, but -it is not studded with tepees, as ■ New Zealauders might imagine. Many of the tribe have fine homes and thenown motor cars. They are sociable people, and have adopted European habits and modes of living. Few ancient customs have been preserved.
