SWIMMING

LAST NIGHT'S CARNIVAL SOME GOOD PERFORMANCES Poverty Buy'a best swimmers, together with several country and Coast competitors, gave some splendid performances in championship, handicap, and relay contests at last night's carnival, held under the auspices of the Gisborno Amateur Surf and Swimming Club at the High School baths. Miss Kathleen Miller, of Wellington, champion furlong and quarter-mile lady swimmer of the Dominion, and 1928 New Zealand Olympic representative, compel ed in the 100yds. ladies' handicap and 66 2-3 open handicap. Miss Miller also paced Miss Jean Richardson, the only competitor, in the 50yds. ladies' club championship. The attendance was the largest toi date this season, many late comers being unable to find seating accommodation. Perfect swimming conditions prevailed, the night being warm. Two club championship titles changed hands last evening. The failure of Miss N. Stevens, holder of the 50yds. ladies' title, and Miss M. Franklin to appear left Miss J. Richardson to swim the race alone. This season Miss Richardson has shown a great improvement on her last season's form, and her success seemed almost assured even had (he previous title-holder started. Keen competition was witnessed in the 50yds. men's club championship, which was won by R. Colebourne. Last year's champion, J. Robinson, was unplaced in the final. McKeague was the fastest away at the start, establishing an early lead from R. Colebourne, with J. Crawford, J. Robinson, and E. Bradley following closely in that order. Colebourne overhauled and passed McKeague a few yards before reaching the turn, while Bradley was gradually moving away from Crawford and Robinson. On the return journey, Colcbourno sprinted strongly, and in a great iiuish he beat McKeague by 2ft. Bradley was third, inches furl hoi': away. CLOSE FINISHES. The 150yds. men's handicap for the President's Oup developed into a sterling finish between D. W. McKeague and J. Miller, both of whom started from itlie spratch mark. Gaining a slight advantage from his handicap, E. Bradley was the first away, but Miller heat him to the turn. They swam almost neck and neck for the next 50yds., McKeague and Miller turning together at the end of the fourth lap, with Bradley making a strong effort to close in on the leaders. When McKeague went ahead at the finish, Miller sprinted and almost caught him, the former winning the race by inches. Bradley was 2yds. behind Miller. D. Miller, winner of the men's club championship dive for the second year in succession, gave a pleasing exhibition of diving from the low and high boards. His efforts "were greatly appreciated, and on leaving the water he was warmly applauded. Good entries and close finishes characterised the handicap races. The manner in which the limit swimmers and back-markers were brought together at the finish reflects considerable credit on the club's handicapper, Mr. Owen F. Paltridge. Interest attached to the water polo match between teams representing the possibles and probables, captained by T. Wauchop and D. W. McKeague respectively. The final scores were I—o in favor of the possibles, E. Bradley netting from a difficult position just beforo the end of the first spell. Both teams gave a good exhibition, the possibles having slightly the better of the game. Mr. J. S. Wauchop controlled the match.

There was not a dull moment at any stage of the carnival, the events being run off in splendid style. The following officials are to be complimented on their capable administration: Judges, Messrs B.
