Conditions are ideal for the resumption of tho Plunket JShield cricket match between Wellington and Canterbury. There is bright sunshine and a- light northerly wind. The wicket is ill splendid order. Talbot (20) and Lester (8) resumed lor Canterbury, to the bowling; of Badcock and McGirr. The batsmen opened contidently, but found scoring dillicult. Lester brought 150 up after 10 minutes' play with a two to the leg off McGirr, but two balls later he snicked one to McKenzie in the slips, and tho fieldsman accepted the catch. —150—6—12. Powell was next, and opened with two nice shots to the off when facing McGirr. Badcock kept the batsmen quiet, bowling four successive maidens. In his fifth over he clean bowled Powell. —167—7—11.

Merritt was next, and opened with a single from Badcock. Hope replaced McGirr, who had taken three for 51 in 16 overs. At 11.45 a.m. tho score was 180 for seven wickets.

Talbot and Merritt scored well off. Hope, though Badcock was still proving difficult. .Mistakes ' in the fiolcr helped the score along. Off the last ball of Hope's third over, Merritt returned'one to the bowler, who took a good catch.—l9s—B—lo. Burns followed. Talbot reached 50 and made the total 200 after an hour's play with a four to leg off- Hope. Off the last ball of tho over he was caught in tho slips by Lamason. —201—9—50. P.B.'S, SECOND STRIKE AN UNPROMISING START With a lead of 80 on the first innings, Poverty Bay in their match against Doneghuo's Wellington eleven, commenced their second strike shortly before noon, but if the opening in their first innings was unpromising the commencement of the second was more so. The first five wickets in the first innings yielded 90 runs, but in the second five of the batsmen had succumbed with only 28 on the board. Tlie first -wicket went after only six runs had been scored, Wilson being held by Morgan in the slips. Fortune got Edwards' wicket 15 minutes later after only six more runs had been added. Joe Scholium and Forster added 12 more runs and brought the score up to 26 before Forster was bowled by Fortune, while Scholium followed a. "little later, with the total at 28. The fifth wicket fell without any addition. There did not appear to be anything particularly dangerous about the bowling, but the wicket was becoming slightly worn and the ball was bumping a. little.
