POVERTY BAY \ VISITORS 122 FOR 8 WICKETS After an indifferent start Poverty Bay in its match against Dpneghue's Wellington team made 232 runs in the first innings, which closed at the tea adjournment. The Wellington side went to the wickets at 3.55 p.m., and when stumps were drawn at 6 p.m. the score was 122 for the loss of .eight wickets. Hepburn and Oapstick, -facing the bowling of Blathwayt and Olsen, made a disastrous start, the (howlers in their second overs securing a wicket apiece with only two runs on the board. Ward and Massey, however, improved matters, but, when the latter had made 15 and appeared to be going well, he was stumped off a ball from Olsen. The score then was 26. Doneghue joined Ward, and they had .half a century on the board after an hour's play, Ward having contributed 20 of this total and Doneghue 11. Olson's slow, good length bowling with a. slight break appeared .to have tho batsmen thinking, for. eight of his 13 overs up to this stage, were maidens, and only 14 runs had been scored off him, while he had taken two of tho wickets. W. J. Scholium and Jennings were tried with the ball at the southern end, but Ward and 'Doneghue were batting confidently, hitting out strongly at all loose stuff," but treating anything difficult with caution. Ward, partnered by Morgan, increased his scoro by 14 before Joe Scholium, in his third over, sent him to the pavilion. —92—5—44.
