Mr. Charles Mat thews left this morning for Rotorua, where he will undergo a fortnight's treatment necessitated as a result of an injury to his leg some weeks ago. • The Hon. Henry Marks, C.8.E., of Suva, has been notified by the Governor that, the King has approved of his re tention of the title of Honorable as a recognition of 19 years' legislative service. Opinion in Sura is that tho recognition is inadequate. Mr. B. Grant, stock and dairy inspector for the Agricultural Department in Christchurcli for the past 13 years, has been notified that he has been promoted to the Palmerston North district. He will leave Christchurch early in February.
A New York cablegram states that Frances Alda announces her retirement from the operatic stage after 21 years' affiliation with the Metropolitan Opera Co. The staff directors and singers combined in a farewell reception on Saturday. She will devote her activities to radio hereafter.
