OIL WELLS
RICHEST IN EUROPE PORTUGUESE FIND Extensive petroleum wells have been discovered near Beira, in Central Portugal, and, according; to the discoverer, a Portuguese oil engineer, Manuel Costa Paelieeo, they arc the richest in Europe. The Ministry of Commerce lias confirmed the engineer's statements, and State aid lias been promised to exploit the ground. The oil grounds, said to be the largest petroliferous basin in Europe, are at Alba de Seiihora Victoria, 41 i r.S '
miles from the village of Saint Pedro de Muel, in a great pine forest near Beira which belongs to the State. After soundings and excavations necessary to confirm his discovery, the engineer registered a claim at the office which is attached to the Ministry of Commerce for that purpose. Then lie informed the Director-General of Commerce and Industry at the Ministry of Commerce, and asked him to have the ground examined. The Ministry has 'satisfied itself that the oil is there in great quantities (says the London Daily Ex'press). According to the director's statement to the Portuguese press, these oil mines are rich enough to solve completely the financial and economic situation in Portugal.
