Continuing the-Plunket Shield match against Canterbury, Wellington opened their second innings at 12.25 p.m., Dempster and Lowry taking strike to Cromb and Lester. Ten appeared on the board after 10 minutes. Two fours to Lowry off Lester gave him double figures. Dempster sent 20 up with a four off the same bowler, but was clean bowled next ball. —23—I—7.1—7. James was next. With the score at 32 Merritt replaced Cronxb, and James was caught in.the slips off his first ball.— 32-2—4. McKenzie followed, the score at lunch being 37 for two wickets. Simmonds and Merritt were the bowlers after lunch. The scoring was slow for a start, but quickened later, some well placed shots improving the total. With the score at 56 McKenzie hit Merritt to leg, whene Talbot took a good catch close in.—s 6—3—9. Badcock was next, and scored in merry fashion, making 24 in seven minutes before being bowled bv Simmonds. —84—4 -24. Lamason followed, font was bowled by Merritt without scoring. At 2.20 p.m. the score, was 87 for five wickets. One hundied appeared on the board at 2.30 p.m. Runs' came steadily, both Lowry and Lambert hitting hard' and often. Lowry reached 50 at 2.40 p.m., but shortly afterwards Lester, who had relieved Simmonds-, bowled Lambert—--128-6—17. McGirr was next, but soon lost, Lowry, who played on a ball from Lester—l33—7—s9. Poverty Bay gaime was continued on the Oval after lunch, and it appeared as though the innings would not last longi Three more men were dismissed in quick succession, the sixth wicket falling at 32, the .Seventh at 36, and the eighth at 47, As in the first innings, the ninth wicket stand greatly improved matters for the home side. When Clifton and Turbitt became associated the opportunity was taken td secure every possible, run. The half-century went up after an hour and half's play, but after that runs came more quickly, CM'ton hitting five .boundaries and Turbitt appearing content to allow his partner to do the scoring. Turbitt opened out when the score reached 82, and was bought by Fortune at mitl-of. Their partnership yielded 3f>, aiut only one more run was added before the inn ; iiigs closed. Enquiring 164 to win, Wellington went in for their final innings shortly after 3 p.m. At the afternoon tea adjournment Wellington, in their second innings, had scored 33 runs for the loss of one Wicket.
