DASH ROUND AUSTRALIA

WEEK IN A MOTH ATTEMPT TO BREAK RECORD 0 SYDNEY, Dec. 12. A spectacular air dash round Australia m sevon days is to be undertaken shortly by Fiying-U'tlicet' J. A. Mollison, of one of the airway services, and Mr. YV. Pendle, an enthusiastic private owner-pilot. Although little has so far appeared in the press about the flight, careful preparations have been made for an attack on. the record for the flight round Australia now held by Squadron-Leader Jvingsford-Smith and Flight-Lieutenant Ulm. They did the journey in 1927 in 10 days in a Bristol ’plane. Pilot Mollison and Mr. Pendle will attempt the record in the latter’s Gipsy Motu. Much of the living will be done at night, hut, if possible, all landings will be made m daylight. The proposal is to leave Adelaide at 3 a.m., to land at Melbourne and at Sydney to refuel, and to reach Brisbane the same day. It will take quite a. lot of doing, but, after all, none but the brave and daring deserve the air and its triumphs. The next stage has not yet been decided, hut the lliers, it is believed, Rope to cross Queensland in one stage The route followed will he approximately that taken hv the lion. (Japtain Hugh (frosvenor, the dashing young heir to a sporting British peer, and A..U.C. to the Governor of South Australia, in his rouudAustralia flight early this year. It is hoped to make Perth to Adelaide, the last stage, also in one day. if the Hiers succeed, they will break most of the records for round-Australia living. (They say they believe there is a sporting chance of success. Captain Grosvenor, by the way, is proposing a record-making dash from Australia to England. He, too, will have his work cut out to eclipse the record by Smith and Ulm in that sphere in the Southera Cross.
