SPAIN AND AFRICA
TUNNEL PBOJECT MADRID, Nov. 12. The first -steps of an ambitious scheme for connecting Spain and Africa by a tunnel have been begun in a practical manner, according to El Debate. Tlio difficulties aro much greater than in tho case of the English Channel scheme,, on account of tho depth of -the-water in tho Straits, 'which is 400 yards in some places. As no trustworthy chart exists, a ship is to be lilted out with special surveying apparatus which measures the depth by the sound of detonators striking the bottom of the sea. Near Tarifa drillinghas already been started under instructions by the Government to ascertain th© nature of the earth through which tunnelling will have to take place. If after investigation on both sides of the Straits water-tight rock is found at a distance suitable for tunnelling, the. project can seriously bo considered. Preliminary soundings at Tarifa have reached some 350 ft. but they must go down at least 1300 ft according to present calculations.
